Frequently Asked Questions
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax in India, introduced on 1 July 2017. It replaced multiple cascading taxes like VAT, service tax, central excise, and octroi, creating a single national market. GST has four main slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) apply on intra-state transactions — both are half the total GST rate. For example, 18% GST intra-state = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. IGST (Integrated GST) applies to inter-state transactions and equals the full rate. The IGST collected is then shared between the central and destination state governments.
GST Exclusive: Your listed price does NOT include GST. GST is added on top. Example: ₹1,000 + 18% GST = ₹1,180 total. GST Inclusive: Your listed price already INCLUDES GST. Extract it using: Taxable = Price × 100 / (100 + Rate). Example: ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% → Taxable = ₹1,000, GST = ₹180.
Compare the supplier's state (the seller's address) with the place of supply (typically the buyer's state). If both are the same state → Intra-state → CGST + SGST applies. If they are different states → Inter-state → IGST applies. For export transactions, IGST applies (or you can supply under bond without tax).
GST registration is mandatory if your aggregate annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (goods) or ₹20 lakhs (services). For North-Eastern, hilly, and special category states, the threshold is ₹20 lakhs (goods) / ₹10 lakhs (services). E-commerce sellers must register regardless of turnover.
